Achievement Awards Australians are encouraged

linked to school enrolment and attendance across the Northern Territory as
part of a strategy to improve education outcomes when the emergency

blamed the State Government for pushing nearly half a million Queenslanders
into poverty. Sunshine Coast Daily, 19 October. SA Poverty a hidden problem, says
welfare agency SACOSS executive director
Ross Womersley says more than one in 10 South Australians lives in poverty. But he says a survey has found three-quarters of
South Australians underestimated the extent of poverty. Mr Womersley thinks

squeeze on a third of tenants in Hobart, research has found. The National Centre for

from the Salvation Army. The Age, 18 October. A battle against homelessness Nearly $80 million has
been allocated by the Department of Human Services over a four-year period to
tackle the problem of homelessness in Victoria. La Trobe Valley Express, 17
October. WA Living in a tent Two local people have been
living in a tent due to lack of social housing in Collie. The pair, who did not want
to be named, said they have been camping in relatives’ backyards and moving
from house to house while on the housing list. Collie Mail, 20 October. New home wait longest in the nation If you want a new home
built, start yesterday. It now takes almost nine months to build a house in
WA, with the time taken growing about 10 weeks over the past five years.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, that is the longest wait
period in the country. The West Australian, 20 October. INTERNATIONAL NZ Labour targets homelessness Labour is vowing to tackle
growing homelessness in New Zealand, saying the Government is ignoring the
issue. Stuff NZ, 20 October. Housing NZ staff face further cuts Housing New Zealand (HNZ)
has laid off 130 staff in the last four years and more are set to lose their
jobs. Stuff NZ, 19 October. USA Small Steps Toward the Human Right
to Housing in the U.S. Over the past decade and a
half, the Law Center has been working hard to get the federal government to
acknowledge housing as a basic human right and begin taking steps to
implement its obligations. As documented in our report, Simply Unacceptable: Homelessness
and the Human Right to Housing in the U.S., for
many years, the government was openly opposed to defining housing as a human
right. It came close in recent years, but didn’t quite get there. Homelessnesslaw, 18 October. Income Disparity And The 'Price Of
Civilization' The Occupy Wall Street
movement has been criticized for lacking focus — but its main slogan seems to
be resonating. That slogan, "We are the 99 percent," highlights the
