When the homeless have pets they are refused shelter. That may soon change, writes Jim O'Rourke. John is 52 and has been living rough on Sydney's streets on and off for more than a decade. The security arrangements for the asylum seeker detention centre in Tasmania's south have been detailed. South Australian nursing homes urged take the pressure off overflowing hospitals

The State Government has turned to the aged-care system to reduce pressure on overflowing metropolitan hospitals. Adelaide Now, 26 August.

 

Homelessness figures shelter the truth, says SA group

Shelter SA says the "count", used by public servants to claim homelessness has been halved, is unreliable. The Government this month announced the latest inner-city count had found only 51 rough sleepers, down from 73 last August and a high of 108 in 2007. Adelaide Now, 18 August.

Home waiting list grows in Hume

The number of people waiting for public housing in Hume has jumped almost 10 per cent. According to State Government figures, 1797 people were on the waiting list in Hume at the end of June, compared with 1635 people at the same time last year. Hume Leader, 25 August.

 

New rules on rooming houses key in on safety

Hundreds of rooming house operators will be forced to beef up safety and security under a state government crackdown designed to weed out dodgy landlords and prevent future deaths. The Age, 24 August.

Waiting years for a home

Thousands of disadvantaged and low-income residents, desperate for a home, are on public housing waiting lists in Sunshine and Footscray – some for up to a decade. Star News, 23 August.

 

High rents cost families a third of their income

Inner-city families on an average weekly wage are feeling the rental squeeze, and facing rents of more than a third of their income, a new Tenants Union of Victoria report shows. The union analysed private rental affordability data for the first quarter of 2011 and found all households depending on Centrelink were experiencing financial stress. Rise in homeless in Moonee Valley

More people are going homeless or being forced into rooming houses as our public housing waiting list continues to grow. Latest figures show 14,370 homeless or at-risk people were waiting for public housing across the north west metro region in June.

A single mother, whose violent ex-partner has threatened to kill her and steal her children when he is released from jail, has issued a desperate plea to the State Government for emergency housing. Herald Sun, 21 August.

Tammee Murphy didn't want to pay $310 a week to rent a lounge room in a three-bedroom house in Epping, but she didn't have a choice. The Age, 19 August.

 

Bendigo housing dilemma deepens

Public housing waiting lists continue to increase in Bendigo. The latest statistics released by the state government show that the amount of applicants on the public housing waiting list was 1158 for the June quarter, an increase from 1081 in March. Bendigo Advertiser, 15 August.

Calgary launching program to combat homelessness

The Calgary Homeless Foundation and 21 other organizations are celebrating the launch of a city-wide plan aimed at end youth homelessness. Calgary, 12 August.

 

Fighting against homelessness

Enhancing co-ordination among support agencies, adding more affordable housing and continuing research. Those are the three main objectives of Calgary’s new City-wide Plan to End Youth Homelessness, unveiled Friday. Metronews, 12 August.

A Far North Maori trust says the region is crying out for investment in social housing

He Korowai Trust has saved more than 200 homes from mortgagee sales in the last five years. It has just been awarded an ASB grant of $450,000, to set up a homelessness prevention unit. Radio New Zealand News, 24 August.
