Moves to slug public housing tenants for water

Tasmania's 12,500 public housing tenants could be forced to pay for water. A Treasury bungle has revealed the public landlord is lobbying the State Government to allow it to recoup its $9 million dollar annual water bill.  ABC News, 30 August.

Tenants sleep on floor in new government housing

Dozens of new houses have been built under a government program but tenants are sleeping on the floor. People in remote Aboriginal lands have been moving into new homes built by the South Australian Government but the accommodation is unfurnished. ABC News, 2 September.

 

Disability housing project launched

Disability Minister Jennifer Rankine opened a $1.58m supported accommodation project in Mount Gambier and warmed the hearts of people with a disability on Friday. The Border Watch, 31 August.

Big jump in family violence reports

Victoria Police's latest crime statistics have uncovered a disturbing picture of domestic violence in the state, with family related crime soaring in the past year. Acting Chief Commissioner Ken Lay has labelled it an ''insidious'' problem and said it would be a major focus for police in the next year. The Age, 31 August.

 

Poor healthcare in Victoria's jails a 'major threat'

Victorian prisoners face ''grossly inadequate'' mental healthcare, and high rates of hepatitis among prisoners pose a major threat to the public health system, according to an Ombudsman's report. The Age, 31 August.

City's housing waiting list grows by 24 per cent

Figures released show that in Geelong the public housing waiting list is 2194, while the State's waiting list grew by 2.2 per cent in the three months to June to 38,244. Since July 2008, Geelong's public housing waiting list has swelled by an alarming 24 per cent. Geelong Advertiser, 31 August.

About a thousand of Ballarat’s most needy people are waiting for public housing, the latest government figures reveal. Rdata for June 2011 shows that 974 applicants are on the public waiting list. The Courier, 30 August.

 

Common sense for homeless solution

"Susie" was homeless for 17 years before moving into her apartment at Elizabeth Street Common Ground. Common Ground turns one this week. The service gives 131 homeless and low-income earners a stable and secure one-bedroom apartment. But HomeGround Services chief executive Stephen Nash said four more Common Ground facilities should be built in Melbourne. Melbourne Times Weekly, 30 August.

Long-term support scheme helps homeless succeed

WA is heading for a major housing shortage as the number of new homes drops to global financial crisis levels despite expected population growth of more than 1000 people a week. The West Australia, 30 August.

Getting streets ahead: improving the health of the homeless

The government’s recent announcement of “a vision to end rough sleeping”, which included a national commitment to help homeless people access healthcare, is a positive step, but a lot more needs to happen at a local level if this commitment is to be met, says Homeless Link director Jacqui McClusky. Study: Affordable housing for low-income families in short supply

Reducing Isolation in Los Angeles County

The LIFE Project primarily serves women, as well as some men, who experienced homelessness and live with co-occurring disorders in Los Angeles County, California.
